« Les enjeux autour du territoire de Gardiki : une emprise territoriale hospitalière contestée en Romanie »

Abstract : The territorial conflict between the Hospitallers and the Latin Bishop of Gardiki in Thessaly in the second decade of the 13th century allows us to raise several essential questions concerning the territoriality of military orders in the Latin Empire of Constantinople. This episode reveals the fierce competition for land and rights over the people who lived there. The determination of the Hospitallers to defend by arms the castle and the territory that they grabbed shows their will to settle in Greece and to participate actively in its conservation. The correspondence on this conflict is rich in information on the Hospitaller relationship to the territory: it gives elements on the local geography; the farming with an estimate of the quantities produced; the nature of the seigneurial rights; but unveils especially new aspects of the relation of the brothers of the order with the multidenominational population that they administered, as well as the hierarchical organization of the Hospitallers in Romania. This crisis involving all the main regional actors at the initiative of the Popes sheds light on the political, social and economic context in Eastern Thessaly and demonstrates the implicit support of the lay authorities for the Hospitallers, indispensable in a period troubled by the threat of the rulers of Epirus.
