Sartre wrote that each sentence of L’Etranger looks like an island. The article analyses how the french compound past contributes to this stylistic effect, and how this tense is translated in catalan and in castillan, two languages that do not have the equivalent of this tense.

En quoi le passé composé participe-t-il à faire que chaque phrase de L’Étranger semble « une île » selon le mot de J.-P. Sartre? Après avoir parcouru la grammaticalisation du passé composé en temps narratif du passé, et défini la textualité narrative, nous examinons trois hypothèses explicatives possibles : l’ancrage déictique du passé composé, sa dimension épistémique testimoniale, sa représentation aspectuelle rétrospective du temps interne. Après avoir retenu cette dernière hypothèse et expliqué en quoi l’aspect du passé composé tend à refermer chaque procès sur lui-même, nous étudions les problèmes rencontrés et les solutions trouvées par les traducteurs de L’Étranger dans deux langues romanes qui ne disposent pas d’un temps verbal équivalent du passé composé français : le catalan et le castillan.
