L’adjectivité dans deux antipodes typologiques, en termes de concentricité/exocentricité

Résumé

Our objective here will be to explore this transitional domain of adjectivity by probing the form of this secondary lexical category, the adjective, by considering the verb-noun opposition, both from the point of view of some characteristic encoding processes of the adjective as a lexical class (understood as part of speech), as it can be observed in some world languages, and as a continuum of condensation of morphosyntactic marks, or distributional continuum. This second point of view will allow us to question the extension of the adjectival category in grammatical theory in terms of adjectivity, through the prism of a major typological parameter: that of the opposition between concentric languages, or Head-Marking (HM) and exocentric languages, or Dependent Marking (DM) - cf. Nichols (1986), Lehmann (2005). The former provide heuristic avenues of research on the status of this intermediate class between noun and verb. The first ones concentrate or exocentric) provide heuristic leads on the status of this intermediate class between noun and verb that is the adjective and, consequently, help to better apprehend the concept of adjectivity, understood as the form and content of this paradigm that can be considered as intermediate within the verb-noun polarity in the world's languages. To this end, we have selected, typologically (and not phylogenetically), several Mesoamerican languages of the concentric type: Tseltal (data from Polian 2013) and Mazatec (data from Gudschinsky 1959, or our own), representing Mayan and Otomangian languages, respectively, and several Fennic (Uralic) languages: Finnish (Hakanen 1973; Hakulinen & Karlsson 1979) and Estonian (Erelt & al. 1993-1995). These languages will act as more or less archetypal parallels of the two ends of the HM vs. DM distributional continuum in morphosyntax. On the theoretical level, we will cross the semantic taxonomy of Dixon (1982) with the proposals of confrontation of semantics with syntax according to Lemaréchal (1989, 1991, 1992) and Edmonds (1985) as well as lexical morphology according to Dokulil (1994), in order to revisit the notions of adjective and adjectivity with the help of complementary models.
