On the occasion of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of the Revue des Langues romanes (1870) and Romania (1872), the editorial staffs of the two journals organised a double colloquium. The first was held in Montpellier on 14 and 15 October 2021. The intensity of the historical moment perhaps helps to explain the birth of the two journals, which are at the origin of French Romance philology. The Franco-Prussian conflict, and the civil war that followed, hardly seem to leave any doubt as to the existence of cultural and political issues within this double foundation. Scientific concerns thus followed the need to reappropriate a linguistic and literary heritage that the Germans, with the foundation of Romanistics, had already begun to study by combining romantic enthusiasm with the positivist method. The first Parisian philologists had been trained across the Rhine, and in 1875 the Société des Langues Romanes obtained the creation of two chairs in Montpellier devoted to Oc and Oïl after having pointed out the existence of these same courses abroad. The two journals constitute, in a way, the common front of French Romance philology, but their reciprocal relations will not always be at their best, far from it. Their relations also reflected the historical context: while Charles de Tourtoulon and Octavien Bringuier studied the ancient and modern frontier between Oc and Oïl, Gaston Paris could not accept the existence of two languages on the national territory. From the outset, the scope of Romania was limited to the Middle Ages, whereas the Revue des langues romanes was open to "modern dialects" and, supported by the Felibrean situation, combined philology with literary creation. It is therefore the scientific, historical and political aspects that can be studied from the comparative analysis of the two journals.
