Ανάλυση της χρήσης λεξικών δανείων στην ελληνική γλώσσα: Μια εμπειρική μελέτη στις ψευδόφιλες μονάδες

Abstract : "Borrowing" is a linguistic phenomenon that is of particular concern to contemporary linguistics, as it is inextricably linked to the contact between linguistic communities. "False friends" are often products of borrowing. We consider "Loans" to be words that have been introduced into one language from another at a given point in time, while we accept as "False friends" those words that show phonetic or morphological similarities but semantic divergence between the two languages. The present study is a first attempt to investigate the use of False friends in Greek. The selected False friends are loanwords. We are concerned with the frequency of use of loaner False friends and the correctness of their use by native speakers of Greek. For this purpose, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted on a representative sample in terms of gender, age and level of education. The paradigmatic sentences of the questionnaire were mainly drawn from the corpus of texts of the Institute of Speech Processing and were grouped in order to allow generalization and drawing conclusions of general influence. Items such as gender, age, education, status and foreign language proficiency were put forward as potential factors influencing the correctness and frequency of use of False friends (control variables). Regarding the preference for words of Greek or foreign origin in speech, the statistical processing of the data showed a slight general tendency towards the former, which is particularly noticeable in the category 'Aesthetics & Entertainment'. The frequency of use of False friends is mainly influenced by the age and status of the respondent. In relation to correctness of use, a general tendency of respondents to answer correctly was found. Obviously more correct usage was observed in the categories 'People' and 'Aesthetics & Entertainment'. Usage is influenced by gender, age, status, level of knowledge and the speaker's attitude towards English. Finally, it can be seen that the correctness of the answers is related to the preference or avoidance of using False friends.
