The representation of the monarchy in some productions of Shakespeare's Richard II
La représentation de la monarchie dans quelques mises en scène de Richard II de Shakespeare

We shall study three productions of Richard II from the angle of the representation of the monarchic system and the character of the king : that of Patrice Chéreau’s (1970), Deborah Warner (1995) and De Peretti (2004). Chéreau, who was influenced by Brecht and Kott, exhibits the wheels of power and History in a decor transformed into a machine meant to destitute the kings. This machinery enhances the ludicrous theatracality of the child king perverted by power and adopting the part of the clown. Deborah Warner reenacts the medieval context and the choice of Fiona Shaw for the title role imposes Richard as a « non man ». Deprived of gender, he emerges as a child but also as a « god on earth » who demeans himself for the love of Bolingbroke. This latter comes to power by sacrificing the one who cherished him and whom he cherished the most. As for De Peretti, the characters who belong to the same family have an antagonistic or fitting attitude towards the clan. By linking the Fate of Richard II to Corsica, he makes of the king a political figure, indeed, but also nihilistic. Thus, highlighting the tragic dimension of the play.
Nous examinerons trois mises en scène de Richard II sous l’angle de la représentation du système monarchique et du personnage du roi : celle de Patrice Chéreau (1970), celle de Deborah Warner (1995), celle de Thierry de Peretti (2004). Influencé par Brecht et Kott, Patrice Chéreau exhibe les rouages du pouvoir et de l’Histoire dans un décor devenu une machine à déposer les rois. Cette machinerie rehausse la théâtralité grotesque de ce roi enfant perverti par le pouvoir et qui tient le rôle du bouffon. Deborah Warner, elle, restitue le contexte médiéval, mais le choix de Fiona Shaw pour le rôle-titre impose Richard comme un “ non-man ” (F. Shaw), indéterminé sexuellement, un enfant, mais aussi un “ dieu sur terre ” qui déchoit par amour pour Bolingbroke. Ce dernier prend le pouvoir en sacrifiant l’être qui l’aimait / qu’il aimait le plus. Pour De Peretti, au contraire, l'appartenance des personnages à une même famille détermine des attitudes en adéquation ou en réaction avec le clan. En liant le destin de Richard II à la Corse, il fait du roi un personnage certes politique, mais aussi initiatique et met en valeur la dimension tragique essentielle de la pièce.
